The Pinheads share new clip & single ‘Rain Down’, and announce their third studio album ‘The Mirror’

The Pinheads have today shared their uber-mellow, guitar-laced brand-new single ‘Rain Down’, which is the second offering off their third studio album The Mirror out July 8 via Farmer & The Owl/BMG.

The forthcoming album was recorded & mixed by The Pinheads very own Jez Player, at The Pinshed Sound Laboratory in Stanwell Park NSW in 2020, and mastered by Joe Carra (King Gizzard, Amyl & The Sniffers, Courtney Barnett, Pond), at Crystal Mastering.

Explaining the inspiration behind the single, the band says “Rain Down was written around the time of the 2019/20 bush fires. Walking out of the studio and instantly overcome with the dryness and heat of the evening air – the air was heavy with the smell of burning lands and homes. It is devastating seeing what we needed during that time (rain), is completely consuming us now.”

The Illawarra six-piece have also offered up the clip, with the band’s drummer James Kates being the creative brain behind it all.

Describing the process he says, “As with every film clip, I had no idea what I was doing. I just showed up, loaded my camera and buttoned on when it felt right. Jez and I ended up shooting in a bunch of different locations around The Royal National Park in the hope of capturing some natural magic in whatever way it presented itself. One of the days we decided to trek into a waterfall that we’d heard cascaded into the ocean. As fate would have it, it’d been raining for about 2 years straight, so it was really popping. The kind of imagery more so reserved for somewhere on the other side of the planet. I’d always felt the song wasn’t so much literal and was more about liberation and feeling free. If the imagery can enhance the song or at least not make it any worse then I’ve done my job. Hope you enjoy this pocket of beauty we’re attempting to put out into the world in such a chaotic time.”
‘Rain Down’ follows on from last year’s blistering ‘Heart of Darkness’ which received a first play from triple j Home & Hosed as well as praise from NME AUS, The Music, AU Review and Rage. The ten-track album is a departure from their signature heavy-hitting tracks as they dive headfirst into genre exploration.

Known for their explosive live performances guarantee to tear the house down (literally), they have graced the stages with some of Australia’s best live acts including Amyl & The Sniffers, Skegss and Hockey Dad and performed festival slots at Yours & Owls Festival and SXSW.
