NITOCRIS

NITOCRIS

The beginning of Nitocris was at a Sydney high school in the early nineties when  Sara(bass), Jessamine (guitar), Andi (drums) and Kira(guitar) all learnt to play their instruments together and formed a band in their early teens. A year later, a local street press advertisement in Drum Media recruited Morgana as vocalist. Drawing on classic rock and punk influences, the band quicky had a set together and began to play shows around Sydney.

Just over a year into their existence, the band were invited to play the 1994 Sydney Big Day Out and then followed that with the release of their debut EP Ten Stories Down. At the time Nitocris were one of the country's first all-female punk rock bands, breaking down barriers and helping to pave the way for new bands in years to come.

By the end of 1994 the band had released their debut album Screaming Dolorous and were frequently touring around the country notching up support slots with international heavyweights The Cult, Deep Purple, Rancid, Pennywise and many more, as well as being a regular on the Australian festival circuit.

In 1996 they issued the Hyperland EP, a release that would see them receive significant radio play via Triple J and TV appearances on shows such as Recovery, helping bring the band to a whole new audience.

After a few years of regular touring, Nitocris recorded their second full length album, released in 2000, the self-titled full length was slicker, while still heavy. It would spawn many singles that hit high rotation on Triple J, earned them an ARIA nomination and landed them a spot of the national Big Day Out tour in 2001.

Nitocris split after playing Newtown Festival at the end of 2001 but reformed for a one-off reunion show in 2009. Now in 2026, the band release the critically acclaimed self-titled album on vinyl for the first time and to celebrate will reunite with a one-off show in October.
